Yeovil MP launches petition demanding safe reopening of maternity unit at Yeovil District Hospital

Following the announced closure of Yeovil’s maternity ward, local MP Adam Dance, has launched a petition urging Somerset NHS Foundation Trust to provide a clear and public timeline for the reopening of the maternity unit at Yeovil District Hospital. The unit is set to close temporarily from 5pm on Monday due to safety concerns raised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) regarding staffing and governance issues in the paediatric services without a clear idea of when it could reopen.
The closure has left expectant families in Yeovil and surrounding areas without access to local maternity services, compelling them to travel to other hospitals in Taunton, Bath, and Dorchester. This situation has caused significant distress among the community, with many expressing concerns about the lack of a definitive reopening date.
In response to these concerns, Adam Dance has launched a petition demanding that Somerset NHS Foundation Trust:
- Provide a clear and publicly communicated timeline for the reopening of Yeovil Hospital’s maternity unit.
- Implement immediate measures to address staffing shortages and governance issues within the hospital’s paediatric services.
- Ensure the safety and quality of maternity services upon reopening.
- Maintain transparent communication with the community regarding the status and progress of the maternity unit.
Commenting on the petition, Adam Dance said:
"I am extremely concerned by the decision to close Yeovil Maternity Unit — even if the Trust says it is temporary. Families in Yeovil deserve more than vague promises; they deserve answers, action, and proper access to care."
Adam Dance went on to raise the matter at Prime Minister’s Questions [14/05/25], demanding the Government seek to intervene in this decision.
The petition has garnered widespread support from local residents and community organisations, all advocating for the swift restoration of local maternity services. It can be signed at www.yeovil-libdems.org.uk/maternity-unit-campaign.
