Statement: Crewkerne Community Hospital

"In recent weeks, I have received a number of messages from concerned residents about the future of Crewkerne Community Hospital. I want to thank everyone who has been in touch. Your concerns are heard.
"I have raised these issues directly with Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and the Integrated Care Board. I have been reassured that the hospital is not closing, and that no decision has yet been made to permanently reduce bed numbers. But reassurance alone is not enough - we need clear action to protect these beds while future plans are being developed.
"These beds are vital. They help prevent bed blocking in our main hospitals, ease pressure on acute services, and ensure that people can recover safely and appropriately, closer to home. It is essential that we keep these beds in place and fully operational until any future service model is both properly consulted on and proven to offer better outcomes.
"Local NHS leaders have shared ambitions to expand services at Crewkerne as part of the NHS Ten Year Plan. That includes more diagnostics, outpatient clinics, and potentially even treatments like chemotherapy delivered locally. These ideas could bring real benefits, but not if they come at the cost of bed space that is already making a critical difference to patients and families.
"I have made it clear to the NHS that any changes must protect local access and safety. I have also called for better communication and proper public consultation. The NHS belongs to all of us, and local people must be part of the conversation.
“A programme of public engagement is starting this summer. I will be out in the community listening to residents, and I will continue to hold NHS leaders to account. My priority is to ensure that Crewkerne Community Hospital remains a fully functioning part of our local health system, and that no beds are lost without clear evidence and public backing.”
