Adam Dance Statement: Winter Fuel Allowance

“I welcome the Government’s decision to reinstate Winter Fuel Payments for pensioners earning £35,000 or less. This U-turn comes after sustained pressure from the Liberal Democrats and tireless campaigners, who rightly highlighted the devastating impact of the original decision.
“However, it should never have taken this long. Throughout the winter, I heard from constituents who were forced to choose between heating and eating—an unacceptable situation in one of the richest countries in the world. The hardship and distress caused by this policy cannot be undone—particularly for those in Yeovil living in our rural communities with older and colder buildings, where heating is not a luxury but a necessity.
“We will now examine the detail of the Chancellor’s announcement carefully. It is vital that those who need support actually receive it. The Government must also urgently clarify whether there is a cliff-edge at £35,000, which could unfairly penalise pensioners earning just slightly more.
“This winter has been incredibly tough for too many people. The pain they’ve endured must not be repeated—and must not be for nothing.”
