In response to growing concerns regarding knife crime locally, Adam Dance MP has urged the Government to provide greater funding for community policing and youth services across Yeovil and South Somerset.

Speaking as part of a Commons debate, Adam further noted that South Somerset has too often been overlooked when it comes to police funding, standing up for residents who feel repeatedly let down and are anxious for real change.

Following on from the debate, Adam said:

“No resident deserves to live in fear because of inadequate police funding. Visible policing is vital to protect both the physical and mental wellbeing of our communities.

“But enforcement alone is not enough. Cuts to youth services have left vulnerable young people without the support they need, pushing them onto our streets. This is simply not right. We must invest in high-quality youth services to give young people the opportunities they deserve.

“As your MP, I will continue to press the Government for the support our area needs and ensure Yeovil and South Somerset get the investment they deserve.”

Adam’s contribution comes as new figures show knife crime has fallen for the second year in a row, with police-recorded offences involving a knife or sharp instrument down 9% in the year ending September 2025.

While this progress is welcome, levels remain around 54% higher than a decade ago, underlining the need for continued action and long-term prevention.

It forms part of Adam’s wider work to tackle crime and antisocial behaviour locally. Last month, Avon and Somerset Police held their first beat surgery at his office on Princes Street in Yeovil, giving residents the chance to raise concerns and speak directly with officers about issues in their area.
