Adam Dance MP: “Scrapping Ofwat is a step forward - but now we need action to clean up our rivers”

Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil, Adam Dance, has welcomed the news that Ofwat is set to be replaced with a tougher regulator as an important step forward in the fight to end sewage pollution, but has warned that local communities now need to see meaningful action to clean up rivers and hold water companies to account.
Replacing Ofwat with a stronger watchdog was a clear commitment in the Liberal Democrat manifesto and forms part of the party’s long-standing campaign to stop sewage dumping, end bonuses for polluting water bosses, and invest in clean water infrastructure.
Adam Dance MP said:
“I’m pleased the Government has finally listened to growing public anger and accepted the need for stronger regulation of water companies. Communities like ours have had enough of sewage in our rivers and excuses from regulators. This change is long overdue.”
“For years, the Conservatives looked the other way while water firms poured sewage into our waterways and racked up huge profits. It’s thanks to the pressure from campaigners, local communities, and the Liberal Democrats that change is finally happening.
“But let’s be clear - changing the regulator means nothing unless it comes with real powers, proper enforcement, and investment in fixing the system. People want to see sewage spills stopped, bills brought under control, and our rivers made safe again.”
Adam added:
“This isn’t just about the environment - it’s about public health, local tourism, and respect for the places we love. I’ll keep fighting for communities in Somerset to get the clean, safe water they deserve.”
