Adam Dance MP calls on residents to add their voice to campaign for better support for children with dyslexia

Adam Dance MP stands outside Parliament with campaigners holding signs calling for better support for dyslexic children. One sign reads “Fix the system, not the kids”.

As part of Dyslexia Awareness Month (October), Yeovil MP Adam Dance has joined forces with campaigner Jamie Oliver and the British Dyslexia Association (BDA) to encourage residents to take part in the Voice Petition – a new national campaign calling on the Government to listen directly to those with lived experience of dyslexia and other neurodivergent traits.

The campaign invites parents, teachers and young people to record short voice notes sharing their experiences of the current education system and how it can be improved, as the Government prepares to publish a new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) white paper.

Adam, who is severely dyslexic himself, has made improving support for children with dyslexia one of his top priorities in Parliament. In September, he introduced his first ever Ten Minute Rule Bill, calling for universal screening for neurodivergent traits in primary schools and mandatory training for teachers. The Bill is due for its second reading in November.

Adam Dance MP said:

“Growing up with dyslexia, I know first-hand how tough it can be to sit in a classroom and feel like you’re falling behind. Too many children still go through school without being spotted or supported early enough. That has to change.

“The Voice Petition is a brilliant initiative, and I’m proud to be working alongside Jamie Oliver and the British Dyslexia Association to make sure those voices are heard. It gives families, teachers and young people the chance to speak directly to Government about what needs to improve. Every experience shared is another reminder that early identification and proper support can make all the difference.”

He added:

“This is about giving every child the fair start in life they deserve. I’ll keep pushing for a fairer, more inclusive education system – one that truly works for everyone.”

Residents are encouraged to take part by recording a short voice note (under 60 seconds) beginning with “I’m [name] and I’m [your connection]...” sharing how dyslexia has affected them or someone they know.
