David Laws welcomes Government push to upgrade Salisbury to Exeter railway line

David Laws welcomes push to upgrade railway line.

David Laws has welcomed the announcement made by Danny Alexander MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, that the Government is asking the South West Peninsula Rail Task Force to look into ways to twin the track on the Salisbury to Exeter railway line.

The Rail Task Force has been asked to bring forward their proposals to improve the region's rail network, including the Salisbury to Exeter line, to June 2016. This will ensure that the proposals are ready in time for the next round of rail investment to be announced in July 2017.

David has pushed the case to twin the track from Salisbury to Exeter as it is currently only single track which can cause severe delays when any problems do arise. Twinning the track would help to ensure a more reliable service for the line and the passengers it serves travelling to and from the South West.

After David's successful securing of much needed investment to dual the A303 and A358 last year this announcement comes as the next vital step for the transport infrastructure in the South West.
