David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, has welcomed figures released yesterday by the Office for National Statistics which show that the number of unemployed claimants in Yeovil has fallen.

The number of unemployed claimants in Yeovil constituency in May 2010 was 1,332. This represents a rate of 2.7% of the economically active working age population, the 530th lowest of the 632 constituencies. The number of claimants is 188 lower than in May 2009 and 127 lower than in April 2010.

 David Laws MP said:

"I am pleased with today’s figures that show a drop in the number of unemployment claimants in Yeovil constituency.

"However, we must not become complacent and extra action is needed to further reduce unemployment in our area. I am particularly concerned about youth unemployment which remains stubbornly high across the country.

“The coalition government is committed to helping those who are struggling to get back to work, and I will do all I can as the local Member of Parliament to assist the jobless in our area in getting the support they need during these difficult times.

“I will also continue to work to help secure key orders for major firms in our area to try to protect existing jobs and to help major businesses to thrive in the future.”
