LAWS: ELECTION MUST DELIVER CHANGE FOR THE BETTER.
David Laws, Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil Constituency, commenting on the news that the Queen has given her permission for a General Election on Thursday 6th May said:
“Gordon Brown has held on almost to the last possible day, but at last we have the confirmation that the General Election will be held on Thursday 6th May.
“It has been a huge honour to serve as Yeovil Constituency MP since 2001, and I confirm that I will again be a candidate for the Liberal Democrats in the coming General Election.
“I believe that the people of our area want to see the back of Gordon Brown’s tired and discredited Government.
“However, although people clearly want change in this election, many people are worried that what the Conservatives are offering is change for the worse.
“The Conservative Party doesn’t really seem to have changed, and it is still offering big tax bribes for its rich millionaire supporters, instead of looking after the interests of those on middle and low incomes.
“The Liberal Democrats are a force not merely for change, but for change for the better.
“Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to clean up our political system, sort out the economic mess, invest in education, protect the environment, and cut taxes for those on middle and lower incomes.
“I am standing again in this election for two reasons. Firstly, because I want to be part of a change for the better in Britain, which I believe will only be delivered with many more Liberal Democrat MPs in Parliament.
“And secondly, I want to go on working hard for the people of Yeovil Constituency – protecting local jobs, securing investment in schools and the NHS, and helping to sort out the thousands of individual problems which people raise with their MP.
“I am grateful to all those in our area who have supported me and encouraged me over these last 10 years, and not least over these last 2 years during which a significant minority of MPs brought shame on our politics.
“I am standing again for election because I still have the same enthusiasm that I possessed ten years ago for this job, and for making both Yeovil Constituency and Britain even better places in which to live.”
