LAWS SLAMS CIDER TAX HIKE
David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, has slammed the decision to increase tax on cider.
In today’s Budget statement, the Chancellor announced that duty on cider will rise by 10% above inflation from Sunday.
David Laws MP said:
“Many people will be hugely disappointed with today’s budget. It contained no serious plan to tackle the huge public deficit or make our tax system fairer.
We needed a budget that was honest about what is affordable and where the spending cuts will fall. Instead we got a political dodge.
I am particularly concerned by the enormous increase announced on cider tax. This will hit cider producers in Somerset badly. With the current economic climate these businesses will struggle to adjust to this tax increase and they will undoubtedly see their profits decline as a result. We will oppose this unfair tax hike.”
