LAWS PRESSES DEFENCE SECRETARY ON CHINOOK
David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, today questioned Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth MP on the Government’s decision to buy Chinook helicopters from America, and asked him to consider building them with AgustaWestland, via the existing licence agreement.
The Defence Secretary agreed to consider the suggestion before a final decision is made.
David Laws MP said:
“Westland already have a licence to build Chinooks, so it would be dotty for the Government to insist on building them in the USA.
“I am pleased that the Defence Secretary has agreed to look at this, and will be writing to him to request an urgent meeting to follow this up.
“This is a vital issue - helicopter capability is critical to the future of our armed forces, and these types of decisions are crucial for retaining our UK helicopter capabilities.”
