LAWS GETS GREEN LIGHT IN MPs EXPENSES INVESTIGATION.
David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, today received a clean bill of health from Sir Thomas Legg’s Inquiry into MPs expenses – meaning that all his claims have been found to be in order.
Sir Thomas wrote to David Laws to say that he has looked at the MP’s expenses since 2004 and has found no problems and will not be asking for any repayments from Yeovil’s MP.
Sir Thomas wrote to all MPs in early October, asking for repayments of expenses or additional information about expenses. David was asked to produce a second copy of only one receipt for one item claimed in the last four years, and after receiving this Sir Thomas indicated that he was happy that all the claims were appropriate.
The decision by Sir Thomas has been welcomed by David Laws.
Almost half of MPs are believed to have been asked to pay back some of the expenses they received. Sir Thomas has indicated that he will submit his final report to Parliament in mid-December, but in advance of this he is writing to all MPs to give them his final conclusions.
David Laws MP said:
“I am very pleased that Sir Thomas Legg’s Inquiry has given me a clean bill of health, and that all of my claims have been found to be in order.
“I take very seriously the need to ensure proper use of taxpayers’ money, and I have for some time been the first MP to publish my expense claims each quarter.
“I will continue to regularly publish full details of all my claims, and I will support the urgent introduction of all of the recommendations made by Sir Christopher Kelly to clean up the expenses regime.
“It is vital that we rebuild trust in our political system – this is undoubtedly going to take some time, which is why decisive action is needed.”
