David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, has called upon Post Office Limited to think again about their plans to close the Hinton St. George Post Office in South Somerset.

David called in on Hinton post office and stores on Friday morning, 13th June. Afterwards, David met the Regional Post Office Manager in his Yeovil Constituency Office to set out his opposition to the closure plan. The arguments for closure will be set out in a Post Office Limited “Branch Access Report”, due to be published this week – on 17th June. This will then be followed by a 6 week consultation period.

David Laws MP:

“I am completely opposed to the closure of Hinton Post Office. This is a much used facility in the village, and its closure could once again mean the loss of the last remaining shop in one of our local communities.

“I am delighted to see how strongly and decisively the community in Hinton have already acted to oppose this closure, and I will do all I can to support the local residents and the Campaign Committee.

“I have already tabled a Motion in Parliament opposing the planned closure, and I will be pressing for a debate on this issue. I will also be tabling questions in Parliament this week.

“Last Friday, I met with the Regional Post Office Manager to set out some of my objections to the closure. I am concerned about specific issues relating to Hinton, such as the lack of public transport and the impact on people with disabilities and on the elderly.
