David Laws MP today said,

"I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear of the death of councillor Jean Smith, who I have counted as a close colleague and a good friend for almost a decade.

"I was with Jean only a week ago at a meeting in Chard, and at my local Advice Centre, and it is therefore difficult to come to terms with this unexpected news.

“My thoughts are very much with Jean's family at this time.

"Jean was an outstanding town and district councillor, who also did long and distinguished service as Mayor of Chard. Jean had a dignity, integrity, and care for the community which made her a perfect fit for the role of Mayor.

“Jean played a key role in helping to push forward the refurbishment and renewal of the Chard Guildhall. Although this was at times a testing and stressful task, Jean was very passionate about this project and she knew that what she was doing would be to the long term service of the town.

“Jean was deeply committed to Chard, and even after her move to Ilminster following the death of her husband, it was to Chard that she continued to dedicate her great talents and energies.

"Jean was not only a fine representative of Chard, but she was a loyal person and a good friend. She possessed a no-nonsense style, which was complemented by a personal modesty and willingness to listen to and help others.

"Chard has lost one of its outstanding citizens, and Jean's family and friends have lost a very special person who we will always remember."
