David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, has congratulated Somerset County Council on receiving the maximum four-star rating in its Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) for 2007.

Somerset was also rated in the top category for direction of travel, ‘improving strongly’, placing it overall amongst the best performing councils in England.

The CPA considers the progress the council has made, the management of finances and resources, the performance of council services and how well it is run.

David Laws MP said,

“I am delighted that the County Council has been rated so highly, and congratulate everyone there on their hard work.

“It is a particular achievement to be rated as both top performing and strongly improving.

“I am sure that the council leadership will not be complacent but will continue to work to improve services such as education, social services and highways.”

ENDS.

Notes to Editors:

1. A summary of the CPA is attached.

2. The Direction of Travel Assessment states that:

“Somerset County Council is improving strongly. The Council is clearly improving results for local people. Ofsted and the Commission for Social Care Inspection consider that services for children and adults are improving within priority themes and in some areas the Council is at the leading edge, for example services to people with a learning disability. The Council delivers excellent services to vulnerable adults, with stronger partnerships with health and more people helped to live independently. Somerset Waste Partnership delivers some of the best recycling rates in the country. Cultural services remains strong with very good results in libraries. Performance indicators are improving in most services in 2007/08. However, performance on improving overall economic prosperity and road safety remains mixed. Value for money continues to improve. The Council's corporate ability to deliver its strategic objectives has strengthened. The Council has created an innovative joint venture company with the private sector to help it deliver long-term efficiencies and increase capacity. It is well placed to continue to improve.”
