Laws welcomes news that unitary plans have been dropped
David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, has welcomed the Government’s announcement that the proposals for a single unitary authority in Somerset will not go ahead.
David Laws said,
“I am pleased that the Government has decided not to press ahead with proposals for a single unitary authority in Somerset.
“It is only right that the Government listened to the residents of Somerset who, in the recent referendum, clearly rejected the plans for a single unitary authority for our area.
“I know that the County Council was genuinely seeking to do what it thought was best for our area, but there was a real concern that Somerset was just too big an area for a single authority.
“It is now time for all of the local authorities in Somerset to get back to working closely together to provide the best services possible for local people. There must be neither sulking nor point scoring but instead the Councils need to cooperate to make administrative savings to put into front line services and to keep council tax down. They must all work hard to ensure taxpayers in Somerset receive value for money in local services.”
