Laws promoted to shadow secretary of state for education
David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, was this week promoted by Sir Menzies Campbell to be the new Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families. David will be shadowing one of the most important Government departments, which has been given the responsibility for all issues relating to children – including early years education, schools, child poverty, anti-social behaviour, children’s health, and child protection.
Fellow Somerset MP David Heath has also been promoted to the post of Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor, where he will shadow Jack Straw.
David Laws MP:
“I am really delighted to be asked to take on responsibility for education and all issues relating to children. Helping to ensure that every child in Britain gets the opportunities which they deserve is surely one of the biggest challenges which our country faces.
“This is one of the really important roles which I have always hoped to take on, and I now have a lot of work to do to master all aspects of the portfolio.
“Over the next few months I intend to listen and learn from teachers, parents and young people in our own area – there is nothing like first hand experience for understanding what the challenges really are.
“This Thursday and Friday I will be visiting 3 local schools in Yeovil – Holy Trinity, Huish, and Grass Royal, and I will be paying even more attention than normal to what I am told!
“I have enjoyed my former Work and Pensions responsibilities, and I will continue to take a very close interest in issues such as tax credits, the Child Support Agency and pensions – which are of such importance to people in Somerset. I will continue to pursue these issues in Parliament, and of course I will take up individual cases on behalf of constituents.
“I would also like to congratulate my colleague David Heath on his big promotion to Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor. David is one of the most impressive people in Parliament, and he thoroughly deserves to be given this very big responsibility.”
