Responding to the news that the Government plans to close Jobcentre Plus in Chard, David Laws, MP for Yeovil constituency, has called on the Government to reconsider its decision.

In a letter to the Minster responsible for Jobcentre Plus, Jim Murphy MP, David Laws has criticised the planned closure and highlighted the importance of the Jobcentre Plus services to those living in and around Chard.

David Laws said,

“The Government’s plans to close the Jobcentre in Chard are ill considered and I have written to the Minster setting out my objections.

“Hundreds of people use the Jobcentre in Chard every week; not only to seek work but also to seek guidance from the advisors.

“Closing Chard Jobcentre would make life very difficult for those seeking work that would presumably have to travel to Jobcentre Plus offices in Taunton or Yeovil. If the Government is so keen to increase employment then this seems a backward step.

“It was only in March this year that the Jobcentre in Chard achieved the South West Award for Customer service – the Government should not be closing Jobcentres with a good performance record.”
