Laws slams government on post office closures
Commenting on the news that 2,500 post offices will be closed across Britain, David Laws, MP for Yeovil constituency, said,
“The news that rural Post Offices are to close is deeply worrying.
“Rural Post Offices are crucially important to the communities they serve, particularly those people such as pensioners who cannot easily get into large towns on a regular basis. The Post Office is also often the last remaining shop in many villages.
“The Government should be doing more to protect Post Offices. Instead this Government has consistently undermined the Post Office network by withdrawing its business. The Government should be taking steps to modernise the network to encourage greater efficiency and improve profitability, before resorting to closures. The Post Office network is invaluable in rural areas such as ours and it must be protected.
“I will be doing all I can to press the Government to keep our rural network and to help it grow its business.”
