Laws attacks police funding settlement
David Laws, MP for Yeovil constituency, today attacked the Government over the police grant funding settlement for 2006/07, which will see Avon and Somerset Police Authority lose out on over £15million in grant entitlements.
The settlement has left Avon and Somerset Constabulary with funding well below the average of similar forces. Mr. Laws has written to the Home Secretary, asking him to review the settlement and seeking assurances that there will be a fairer deal fro Somerset.
David Laws MP said:
‘It is vital that Avon and Somerset Police Force receive the necessary funding, and I am extremely disturbed by the proposal that they will lose over £15million during the next financial year against the fair settlement which they should get.
‘What people want is a local police force, properly funded and tackling the issues that matter. I urge the Secretary of State to look again at this funding settlement, and provide a better financial settlement for Avon and Somerset force.’
