Merriott First School looks set to improve its facilities after Yeovil MP, David Laws, and local County Councillor, John Sharpe, chased up concerns by the Headteacher and the Governors about their playing field.

Pupils and staff at Merriott First School have had their games and sports activities hampered by waterlogged playing fields. The drainage of the field has steadily worsened over recent years. This meant that the field was often out of action for weeks or months at a time – especially during the winter.

Now the County Council has drawn up a plan to re-vamp the drainage on the field. It is hoped work will be completed by the time the school returns for the autumn term.

“I’m pleased that the County Council has taken the concerns of the headteacher seriously,” said David Laws MP. “Money is available and the officers are urgently looking for a contractor to carry out the work. I’m sure staff and pupils will be delighted to return to a field they can use all year round.

“The Governors and local County Councillor, John Sharpe are also to be congratulated for pressing the County Council to get this vital school facility back into use.”
