Local MP concerned by temporary closure of post office
David Laws, the Lib Dem MP for Yeovil constituency, has today been notified that yet another local rural post office is set to close. The Post Office has written to David Laws stating that Winsham Post Office will close on 28 August as no sub-postmaster can be found to run it. The Post Office hopes this closure will only be temporary.
David Laws MP said:
“I am obviously very concerned at the news of yet another post office closure in our area, especially since we have lost so many post offices in the last few years. The Post Office is now looking to recruit a new post master for Winsham post office so as to be able to re-open the post office as soon as possible. I hope that this will prove possible.
“Post offices provide vital services and are much relied upon by our local communities – particularly in rural areas such as Winsham. Branch closures in rural areas can be especially damaging given the lack of convenient public transport. For example, while this branch is closed, pension and allowance books will be moved to Thorncombe – the nearest post office. However, this is more than 3 miles away and there is no public transport available between the villages.
“I have been campaigning for some time now to get the Government to act in order to save local post offices. This latest news goes to show how urgently action is needed if people in our area are not to miss out on vital services. “
