David Laws, Lib Dem MP for Yeovil constituency, has today been informed by Somerset County Council that it hopes to fund disability access improvements to Preston Community School in Yeovil in 2003-04. The Council have told Mr. Laws that it hopes to use part of the Schools Access Initiative budget to pay for the accessibility improvements after being refused funding from the Department of Education.

David Laws said:

“I am pleased that the Council has told me that it hopes to fund disability access improvements to Preston Community School in 2003/04. Unfortunately, The Department for Education and Skills was not prepared to give the school a grant to improve their disability access, due to a shortage of finance. So if the Council had not stepped in this important work could not have been carried out.

“The council hopes to use money from its ‘Schools Access Initiative’ to improve accessibility at Preston Community School, but there is still some way to go until the funding details are finalised and building can begin. The Council will have to assess what improvements are needed and draw up the appropriate plans.

“ It is vital that these disability access improvements go ahead as soon as possible so that every child in our area is able to attend their local school with their own friends.”
