Local MP welcomes progress on lyewater earthbank
David Laws, Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil, has been informed that Somerset County Council may build a wall next to the large earth bank at Lyewater in Crewkerne to prevent passers-by being injured by further landslides. Mr. Laws has found out that a report commissioned by the Council recommended that the existing chain link fence, which prevents people from being injured by dislodged stones, should be strengthened and replaced by a blockwork wall.
David Laws said:
“ I am pleased to see that a start has finally been made in making the earth bank in Lyewater safe. This is long due. An independent report now recommends that the chain link fence should be replaced with a block work wall. At the moment the chain link fence around the earth bank is not very effective at protecting people from falling debris and has been breached by large stones. This new wall should be stronger and taller than the existing fence, so reducing the risk of injury to people using the footpath next to the earth bank.
“The Council have now told me that the earth bank will now be examined carefully to decide exactly where a new fence should be built and how tall it will be. Local residents have been very unhappy with the time taken to resolve this difficult issue but I am pleased that some action finally appears to be in sight.
“I hope that this examination takes place swiftly and a that new wall can be built soon. I will continue to work with the Council and local residents to tackle hazards in our area.”
