Local MP welcomes action on crewkerne flooding concerns
David Laws, Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil Constituency, has been briefed by Somerset County Council about the action it is taking to relieve the effects of recent flooding in Crewkerne and to help prevent future flooding. David has been following up progress on anti-flooding measures in Crewkerne following the flooding of Victoria Square two weeks ago.
David Laws said:
“ I am pleased to see that the Council is now acting to identify ways in which flooding in this area can be avoided in future. The Council has told me that it may install two additional gullies to keep water away from Victoria Square and direct it into the nearby stream. The Council may also install new kerbing next week to deflect water past Victoria Square to the steam as an immediate protective measure.
“ The recent storms have affected not just Crewkerne but also Merriott and South Petherton. I therefore hope that this investment in flooding defences will not only leave Crewkerne safer but will also free up some resources to help the surrounding villages after severe storms.”
“I have recently told the Government that it cannot pass responsibility for flooding onto local authorities but not the funding necessary for it. I will continue to push for better flooding funding from central government and also work closely with the local authorities to find ways to tackle flooding problems.”
