Local MP comments on westland redundancies
David Laws, Liberal Democrat MP for Yeovil constituency, has today commented on the results of the Westland restructuring programme. Westland has announced that 410 employees are to take voluntary redundancy, 30 jobs are to be outsourced, 70 employees are to be retrained and 40 employees will be made redundant.
David Laws MP said:
“ I am, of course, very sad to hear of today’s job losses and I know that this will be a blow for the employees involved and their families. My thoughts are with them.
“We must continue to be sure that full support and re-training is given to those made redundant so that they are able to find other jobs locally in what continues to be a healthy local economy.
“Although it will be little compensation for those affected by today’s announcement, the management and unions at Westland deserve considerable praise for the way in which they have managed to minimise the number of compulsory redundancies.
“The initial figure for job cuts of some 600 appears to have been reduced to only 40 or so compulsory redundancies, although many people have obviously left on a voluntary basis.
“I will continually to work closely with the management of Westland to try to secure new orders and get new employment in what is still, by far, Yeovil’s most important business.”
