David Laws, MP for Yeovil Constituency, has today called on the Somerset County Council to reverse its programme of cuts to bus services as it emerged that over 3,000 residents across the Yeovil Constituency have already signed a petition against the wide-ranging service cutbacks.  The planned cuts would leave many villages, such as Merriott, Winsham, West Chinnock and Hardington without any bus services.

In recent weeks Mr. Laws has joined local residents in ‘hotspots’ in Yeovil Constituency that stand to be most affected by the proposals.  Villages such as Winsham, served by only a single bus route, would be cut off under the controversial plans.  Mr. Laws is scheduled to discuss the issue with County Council policy officers in a special conference call tomorrow (Wednesday).

Receiving the latest petition signatures, Mr. Laws said:

“This petition shows the strength of local feeling against proposed Conservative County Council bus cuts.  3,000 of my constituents have told the Council ahead of next week’s meeting that these cuts are a mistake.  Ahead of next week’s crucial meeting I would like everyone in my constituency who is concerned about the damage these cuts would wreak to sign this petition.

“Tomorrow I will be speaking with senior officers at the County Council to convey the concerns of my constituents and I will be urging the County Council to reverse the proposed cuts.  It is completely unacceptable that the proposed cuts would leave places such as Winsham, Merriott, West Chinnock and South Petherton hospital without a bus link”.

Copies of the petition are available to print HERE.  All copies must be returned to the Yeovil Liberal Democrat Office no later than 14th February.
